Beacon
A desk and wall light
Beacon is a desk or wall light that allows the user to change the intensity of light produced by a simple manual push/pull adjustment, encouraging interaction with the object.
The user simply pulls or pushes gently on the top plate to alter the distance between the two metal pieces, thereby reducing or increasing the amount of visible Perspex and therefore the amount of light visible.
The light comprises 3 simple components, an anodised or painted aluminium cylinder with a base, a frosted perspex inner cylinder and a circular aluminium top plate, which is polished underneath to increase its reflectivity.

Using existing objects as inspiration
This project began by looking at existing objects and their mechanisms and design elements as a starting point for a design project
I chose this ‘Tennis Ball Saver’ which uses air pressure created by a screw, to re-pressurise flat tennis balls.
