Play of Light
This project explores the emotional durability of the objects we own. It builds on research into a wide range of collected mechanisms. By altering their context, function and scale, the aim has been to create products which, while they are abstract and playful, remain intuitive.
A collection of three, freestanding lights illustrates how movement, and playful interactions, can help foster a deeper emotional connection with a product, and therefore promote longevity. Each light in the collection integrates its own alternative to the traditional light switch, transforming a usually mundane operation into a memorable experience, and at the same time encouraging an instinctive understanding of the mechanism.
Because they are distinctive, and enjoyable to use, these lights are more likely to be valued, to be looked after and, ultimately, to be kept longer, offering a gentle challenge to today's throwaway culture.
